Eligibility
In order to be eligible to take an entrance exam for an undergraduate program in dairy sciences, a candidate must complete higher secondary education with chemistry, physics and mathematics as compulsory subjects. You can either acquire a 4 year degree in dairy technology after clearing the entrance test for admission to a university offering the course, or can take up short term diploma courses. Once you have completed the graduate degree, you can apply for a post graduate degree, offered by select universities in order to specialize in niche areas of the field. The admission to post-graduate courses of universities again depends on your performance in the entrance exams or the grade you make in the selection criteria of the selected university.
Details Of The Course Curriculum

The department of dairy sciences in almost all universities concentrates on a comprehensive dairy science graduate program. Candidates need to have basic training in science fields related to the subject. Students are put through challenging research and educational opportunities in well equipped laboratories as well as various departments of dairy science.

The masters program in dairy science focuses on the application of the biological and chemical principles in the production of dairy products and management of dairy animals, as well as in handling of dairy products. The master’s program also instructs students on animal sciences, food science and technology, aspects of human and animal health and biochemistry.

A Ph.D. degree in the field is important and helps the candidate strengthen his/her career prospects as a professor, researcher in governmental or industrial laboratories or for a technical service in the dairy industry. The program gives an opportunity to candidates to indulge in a research project of their interest.
Specialization
Graduation in dairy sciences also provides a base for candidates to obtain specialization through a master’s program. Candidates can either opt for an M.Tech or M.Sc in dairy science and technology or some related areas such as animal genetics and breeding, livestock product, or can even opt for more specific areas such as:

Dairy enterprise management, in this specialization course the students will gain training and knowledge in dairy farm business management. With the help of this skill they will be able to increase the dairy cattle performance, manage electronic data, farm finances and land resources and will also be able to implement environmental planning.

Animal Biotechnology and Pre-Vet Studies is a specialization in which the students are groomed through an advanced training or graduate schools to pursue careers in animal research or veterinary medicine. Dual Emphasis is a field of specialization in which the students gets an opportunity to combine together their interest in dairy science with another companion major that will allow the student to gain additional and diverse knowledge in areas such as agribusiness, agricultural education and livestock management.

A career in dairy science and related field can be a challenging one which will offer enough opportunities for trained professionals. The candidates getting in the field of dairy science must be prepared to live in remote areas or away from the comforts of the city life and hard and long hours of work which can at times get difficult to manage with. The professionals might also feel the pressure of maintaining product quality and market requirements. Moreover in order to survive and excel in the field the professionals must possess managerial and organizational skills. The candidates should also have good communication skills and a prior experience in the dairy or agricultural industry will prove to be beneficial.
